AbstractIn this article, we will analyze trends in foreign language teaching in China. To do this, we will initially present a review of the literature on policies and planning for foreign language education in and for China from the perspective of Chinese and Portuguese-speaker scholars in the last years. Subsequently, we will focus on the teaching of less common foreign languages in higher education levels and will take the case of teaching the Portuguese language as a guiding principle to analyze the trends in teaching foreign languages in China from the perspective of China's geopolitical position and its role as a leader in South-South cooperation.
