Abstract | This study surveyed 301 U.S. adults and examined the relationships among the diversity of political information sources, belief in a zero-sum game, and political polarization. The results showed that zero-sum beliefs were linked to greater ideological polarization. Individuals with stronger zero-sum beliefs showed greater ideological polarization with increasing exposure to dissimilar sources in social networks or media. Although both types of information source diversity attenuated affective polarization, such dampening effects were weakened by zero-sum beliefs. |
