Abstract | Candida albicans is an opportunistic pathogen that can live in the human body as a commensal and cause deadly infection when the immune system is compromised. C. albicans can colonize different niches and survive the wide range of stresses elicited from the host during infection. These abilities are mediated by rapid and dynamic transcriptional responses, which are tightly controlled at transcription levels (e.g. transcriptional activation, elongation, and termination) and chromatin modification. The phenomenon of liquid-liquid phase separation can rapidly trigger the formation and dissociation of cellular compartments for biomacromolecules like proteins and nucleic acids without physical barriers. The process is reversible and tunable by factors relevant to the infection process, such as pH, temperature, and salinity. Phase separation has been shown to play crucial roles in controlling various biological processes and pathways in many organisms. We hypothesize that phase separation is important for the transcriptional responses of pathogens during adaption to diverse environmental conditions and infection. This study investigated the role of phase separation on the transcription and pathogenicity processes in C. albicans. |
