| Abstract | Based on a set of Roman Jakobson’s fundamental texts, this paper sketches a theory of (un)translatability, explaining how his doctrine of the sign provides analytical tools for the field of literary translation. First, it argues how Jakobson’s critique of Saussure’s doctrine of the sign broadens its range, creating a tension between the fields of semiotics (“absolutely translatable”) and poetics (“absolutely untranslatable”). This situation is labeled the “stylistic challenge” of (literary) translation. Second, it explains why Saussure’s doctrine of the sign is not able to cope with the “stylistic challenge”: the notions of “arbitrariness” and “linearity” of the sign limit the scope of analysis of syntactic and stylistic issues, which is confirmed by the principles of Charles Bally’s stylistics, of Saussurean mold. Finally, this paper claims that Jakobson’s teachings on (un)translatability are able to deal with such issues. Given that the axes combination/syntagm and substitution/paradigm are independent, it becomes possible to analyze “expressive” effects and values, providing tools to identify equivalences, analogies, etc., means to “transpose” literary statements. Although the dynamic relation between Linguistics/Poetics creates ways to cope with the “stylistic challenge”, certain questions relevant to (un)translatability remain beyond its range, such as what are the criteria to explain aesthetic preferences and to define literary models. |
