Abstract

The development of bioactive materials for tissue repair and regeneration has grown rapidly to meet the huge demand in clinical applications. Especially in soft tissue regeneration, bioactive materials designed in the form of injectable hydrogels, fibrous membranes, and porous scaffolds prepared through three-dimensional printing have had great success in multiple soft tissue applications such as wound healing, skin rejuvenation, tendon/ligament regeneration, and myocardial tissue regeneration. Moreover, bioactive materials can be designed with multiple functions, such as antibacterial, immunoregulatory, and antitumor functions to repair soft tissue in complex situations. When bioactive materials are implanted into tissue defects, complicated biological and chemical processes occur immediately due to the interaction between bioactive materials and living cells, which determine the progress of tissue regeneration. Therefore, the design of bioactive materials requires precise control over biochemical and biophysical cues by modulating the extracellular microenvironment in defect sites during soft tissue regeneration. This chapter provides an overview of the biological effects of materials chemistry such as bioactive ions, biomolecules, etc., on soft tissue regeneration. Recent research progress in elucidating the roles of the chemical characteristics of bioactive materials for different soft tissues are presented, including inorganic bioactive materials for skin therapy, bioactive supramolecules for skin rejuvenation, carbohydrate biomaterials for angiogenesis, and bioactive materials for tendon/ligament, nerve, skin, and myocardial tissue regeneration.
