Abstract | Variety shifting is a feature of English use in Outer Circle contexts in which endonormic local varieties are used alongside exonormic standard varieties. This chapter will introduce some of the theoretical reasons for variety shifting and will survey the scholarly literature related to variety shifting. The phenomenon can often be closely associated with the use of English in the media or popular culture. To demonstrate the types of variety shifting that takes place in Southeast Asia’s Outer Circle societies, the chapter includes a detailed analysis of the phenomenon in the five Outer Circle societies: Brunei Darussalam, Hong Kong, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore. |
