Other Abstract | Cultural values and morality constitute crucial aspects of social life. They are not only responsible for how people organize life, but also how they measure its values. Anthropologists have frequently employed values and morality as an encompassing tool in their study of different kinds of cultures. Values and morality often reveal themselves to be creative, rich, nuanced, and flexible in empirical studies when we consider what it means to organize one’s life and actions. Due to the effects of globalization, society is changing very rapidly. How did individuals respond to institutional shifts of the past decades? How did the responses of individuals in turn reshape the contours (and legitimacy) of economic reform and the party-state? How do people evaluate and justify their social actions? How do individual justifications and evaluations influence the moral landscape in the country, thereby reshaping the moral person in a particular culture? How are values and morality understood in today’s increasingly globalizing world? This upcoming conference in October 2021 aims to rethink morality and values in this globalizing world by centering on the cross-cultural exploration of cultural values, value change, moral change, in addition to examining selfhood, the expression of values and morality in social life, and the fundamental roles they play in situations of social, moral, and cultural change. |
