Abstract

Tourism firms have increasingly adopted intelligent machines in human resource management (HRM) practices for serving and maintaining their employees. However, while the potential benefits of intelligent machines adoption are recognized, concerns are also raised about its negativities; little is known how tourism employees perceive the intelligent machines adoption in HRM practices. Especially, due to the lack of related measurement tools, quantitative research involving intelligent machines adoption in HRM practices in the workplace is rarely involved, and there is widespread controversy regarding the qualitative studies on the impact of intelligent machines adoption in HRM practices on tourism employees. In addition, how tourism employees perceive, recognize and evaluate intelligent machines adoption in HRM practices will fundamentally affect their attitudes and behaviors in the process of human-computer interaction. Therefore, theorists urgently need to develop operable measurement tool for how tourism employees perceive intelligent machines adoption in HRM practices. Based on grounded theoretical analysis and a pilot survey study, this research tends to develop the measure of intelligent machines adoption in HRM practices. Then, following the steps of standard scale development, through content validity evaluation, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural validity evaluation, we construct the scale with 18 items. Finally, drawing on the stereotype content model, we empirically explore the influence mechanism of intelligent machines adoption in HRM practices of tourism employees on the perceptions of their companies. Two independent studies (an experiment and a time-lagged cross-level multi-source field survey) were conducted. Results reveal that intelligent machines adoption in HRM practices will increase (decrease) employees’ competence (warmth) perceptions of their companies, respectively.
