AbstractThe paper surveys the vast resources for exploring the history of Macao dating back as far as the 16th century held in Britain. Besides the National Archives, and major reference libraries such as the British Library and the Cambridge University Library, attention is also paid to specialist archives such as the British Postal Museum Archive and the Royal Botanic Gardens archives at Kew, and local archives across the UK. Taking her own project aiming at constructing a woman-centred narration of Macao’s past as an example, the paper explains how integrated online catalogues such as the National Archives’ “Discovery”, which contains descriptions of records held by more than 2,500 archives across the country, are making what used to be like looking for a needle in a haystack possible. The paper also indicates another revolutionary impact the Internet may have on historical research, suggesting that the rise of online genealogy may link historians and the descendants of the figures they study together, and bring documents stored away in attics, cellars and closets of some British homes into light.
