Abstract | The entrepreneurial ecosystem catalyzes innovations and regional economic growth, thus, scholars and practitioners deliberately cultivate it (Adner & Kapoor, 2010;Mason & Brown, 2014; Spigel & Harrison, 2017). The entrepreneurial ecosystem in-volves dynamic interaction among various entrepreneurial actors, such as entrepre-neurial firms, established companies, professional investors, social institutions, andgovernments, to promote innovation and revitalize the economy (Spigel & Harrison,2017). The entrepreneurial ecosystem perspective complements regional developmentliterature and strategy literature, moreover, entrepreneurship serves as an input, aswell as an outcome of the entrepreneurial ecosystem Therefore, entrepreneurial eco-system presents co-evolutionary patterns (Acs et al., 2017). By confronting liabilitiesof smallness and newness, entrepreneurial firms can gain access to local resources, legitimacy, reduced risks, and accelerate innovation in the entrepreneurial ecosystem(Adner & Kapoor, 2010; Eisenhardt & Schoonhoven, 1996; Spigel & Harrison, 2017).There is vibrant research on the formation and performance of the entrepreneurialecosystem.Prior literature examines innovative outcomes to evaluate the performance ofentrepreneurial ecosystems (Adner & Kapoor, 2010; Dougherty & Dunne, 2011).However, dynamic and self-evolvement of the entrepreneurial ecosystem result indifficulties to measure the effectiveness (Isenberg, 2011; Mason & Brown, 2014; Spi-gel, 2015; Spigel & Harrison, 2017). This paper will adopt the attribute framework ofthe entrepreneurial ecosystem to illustrate the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Chinaand identify how entrepreneurial ecosystems affect the innovation process. This paper contributes to the entrepreneurial ecosystem literature in two ways.First, regional development literature and strategy literature ignores the role of en-trepreneurial firms, thus, this paper adopts an entrepreneurial ecosystem perspectiveto identifies cultural, social, and material attributes of entrepreneurial ecosystems inChina. It has shown top three entrepreneurial ecosystems in China are driven by dif-ferent attributes to facilitate their evolvement. Second, this paper draws from the en-trepreneurial ecosystem perspective to explain how entrepreneurial ecosystems affectthe innovation process. It identifies and discusses the various configuration of an en-trepreneurial ecosystem affect invention and commercialization activities. The rest of this paper consists of four sections. The first section will present thebackground of the entrepreneurial ecosystem. In providing a framework of en-trepreneurial ecosystems, the second section will discuss attributes of entrepreneur-ial ecosystems in China. Zhongguancun (ZGC), Zhangjiang (ZJ), and Nanshan (NS)are the top three innovative entrepreneurial ecosystems in China and maintain |
