Abstract | The use of qualitative, research-based interventions offers a promising, relatively new approach to evidence-based practice in clinical neuropsychology. These interventions, in combination with quantitative methods, allow the clinician to provide a comprehensive range of treatment options for clients with neuropsychological injury. This chapter begins with an introduction to, and a rationale for, the use of qualitative research-based interventions in clinical neuropsychology practice. It links qualitative methods to the biological basis of behavior and offers several applications of qualitative research designs to clinical neuropsychology practice, which include phenomenology, narrative inquiry, and case study methodology. It forges a link between qualitative assessments and qualitative interventions in clinical neuropsychology practice. It uses a case example to describe the use of various qualitative assessments, including behavioral observations, clinical interviews, questionnaires, checklists, rating scales, document analysis, self-monitoring, as well as the innovative, qualitative approach known as the Collage Life Story Elicitation Technique. The chapter offers comprehensive guidelines for the use of qualitative, research-based interventions in clinical neuropsychology practice, outlines multicultural considerations for such interventions, and describes implications for both current and future professional practices in clinical neuropsychology. It ends with a case study and associated questions that are designed to explicate the concepts outlined in the chapter. |
