Abstract | This paper critiques a common definition of wokeism (promoted for instance by Jordan Peterson) as a combination of postmodernist ideology and “cultural Marxism.” It is argued that wokeism is better understood as an intensification of “identity politics” combining the individualist tradition of US-American “civil religion” with post-World War II German “guilt pride.” Seen from this angle, Wokeism is understood as a secular civil religion rooted in Protestantism. Given these rather particular cultural and religious roots, it may not lend itself well to globalization. Importantly, however, wokeism is also characterized by a heavy emphasis on “virtue signalling,” the public display of moralist values on mass and social media (“Zeichen setzen”) in order to curate attractive profiles. In this way, wokeism is embedded in the post-authentic “age of profilicity.” Seen from this perspective, it is conceivable that other traditional religious traditions (e.g. Islam, Confucianism) may develop their respective secular and “profilic” wokeist variants. |
