AbstractSinomenine is a main bioactive alkaloid isolated from the stem of Sinomenium acutum. Sinomenine demonstrates significant analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and immunosuppressive effects, and has presented great potential as a naturally-derived immunosuppressive agent for autoimmune diseases. Many researches have shown that sinomenine exerts its immunosuppressive effects on various immune cells (T cells, monocytes/macrophages, dendritic cells and mast cells) and a number of immune response related factors (cytokines, reactive oxygen, nuclear factor-κB and cell adhesion molecules). Research progress on immunosuppressive mechanism of sinomenine are reviewed in this paper, so as to provide research ideas for identification of immunosuppressive target and signaling pathway of sinomenine as a treatment for autoimmune diseases.
