Abstract | The purpose of this project was to do a comprehensive situation analysis and needs assessment of the psychological well-being of the people of Macao. In this paper we describe the present situation with regard to the ways in which the gaming industry affects family life and challenges the psychological well-being of the residents of Macao SAR. Action research and key informant approach provided the basic methods and semi-structured interviews were conducted to gain an understanding of the enabling and disabling processes in family life due to the impact of the gaming industry. Textual data were analysed qualitatively for four dimensions and four themes emerged concerning the impact of the gaming industry on family functioning, relationships, child care and psycho-social issues in the family. Although not the only influence, it seemed as if the gaming industry did indeed affect the family and psychological well-being of individuals and groups both directly and indirectly. This was a first analysis and the outcome indicated that further research should be done on the perceptions and attitudes of the local residents and to establish frameworks for psychological practices in the context of Macao . |
