Abstract | Macao is a unique context in which neither purely Chinese nor a sound western philosophy of mind prevails. Here an interesting blend of thought processes emerge in the social systems and values that are evident particularly when training the first generation psychological service providers for Macao. In many ways Macao can be considered as a multicultural society where not only Chinese from various regions and linguistic backgrounds come together, but where eastern and western value systems and beliefs have been intersecting for almost half a millennium. The political changes and economic growth, particularly in the gaming industry, of the past few years has also brought about changes that cannot be disregarded in the scope and extent of adding diversity to social life and exacerbating contradictions and anomalies found in the training context of psychologists. What has, however, been absent at this meeting point between east and west in Macao was a training framework for prospective service providers and a psychologically mindful society according to which such services can be offered to the diverse residents of Macao. The purpose of this paper is to reflect upon the development of the first group of psychology majors at the University of Macau, the challenges in developing psychological mindfulness in the Macao society, and establishing a professional identity for the first generation of psychologists. |
