AbstractThis study addresses the media innovation of Bingodu, a news APP affiliated to South Metropolis Daily, a popular market oriented newspaper, in the context of media convergence to investigate what is a viable business model for a news APP. Through the participant observation accompanied with in-depth interviews conducted with the staff of the organization, this study showed that under the leadership of the pioneering legacy news media, Bingodu dedicated itself to a new field of mobile media. In the APP, senior editing and technologies are combined in the content production; external incentive, marketing and interactivity are the three factors affecting user attention. A viable new media business models might be provided in support of a sound system of journalism in the future. This study might provide some referential significance for other legacy news media organizations also in pursuit of media transformation.
