Abstract | This study examines when high tech firms are better off specializing in either exploration or exploitation learning strategy. Drawing on the organizational learning literature and capability literature, we hypothesize that the structural characteristics of firms and the external environments moderate the relationship between support the specialization approach and firm performance. In an original survey data of high tech firms in China, we find that firm age and R&D resources moderate the relation between specialization and superior performance. We also find that specialization works better when competitive intensity is low. |
