Does Institutional Support Cultivate Firm’s Entrepreneurial Orientation in Emerging Economies? | |

Abstract | Today, many emerging market governments use institutional support to boost the development of entrepreneurial activities. However, the impact of institutional support on firms’ entrepreneurial orientation (EO) remains unclear. To provide a holistic understanding of such impact, this research examines the different ways in which institutional support cultivates the three dimensions of firms’ EO (i.e., proactiveness, innovativeness, and risk-taking), and how such effects are contingent on firm ownership and industry life cycle. Using a survey sample of 303 Chinese firms, this study demonstrates that institutional support has an inverted U-shaped effect on proactiveness, a U-shaped effect on innovativeness, and a positive linear effect on risk-taking. In addition, the inverted U-shaped/U-shaped relationship between institutional support and proactiveness/innovativness is weaker for firms in fast-growing industries than for firms in slow-growing industries; the U-shaped/positive linear relationship between institutional support and innovativeness/risk-taking is weaker for state-owned enterprises (SOEs) than for non-SOEs. These findings provide novel insights for research on macro institutional support and firm-level entrepreneurship in emerging economies. |
