Does Institutional Support Cultivate Firm’s Entrepreneurial Orientation in Emerging Economies?

AbstractToday, many emerging market governments use institutional support to boost the development of entrepreneurial activities. However, the impact of institutional support on firms’ entrepreneurial orientation (EO) remains unclear. To provide a holistic understanding of such impact, this research examines the different ways in which institutional support cultivates the three dimensions of firms’ EO (i.e., proactiveness, innovativeness, and risk-taking), and how such effects are contingent on firm ownership and industry life cycle. Using a survey sample of 303 Chinese firms, this study demonstrates that institutional support has an inverted U-shaped effect on proactiveness, a U-shaped effect on innovativeness, and a positive linear effect on risk-taking. In addition, the inverted U-shaped/U-shaped relationship between institutional support and proactiveness/innovativness is weaker for firms in fast-growing industries than for firms in slow-growing industries; the U-shaped/positive linear relationship between institutional support and innovativeness/risk-taking is weaker for state-owned enterprises (SOEs) than for non-SOEs. These findings provide novel insights for research on macro institutional support and firm-level entrepreneurship in emerging economies.
