AbstractIn this paper I’ll focus on the implicit communication. In everyday communicative activities, speakers often appeal to conversational implicatures. Not all of what is explicitly said is to be taken as the meaning the speaker intended to communicate to her interlocutor; on the contrary, the most of the linguistic utterances must be interpreted at an implicit level. Implicit communication constitutes a complex, yet economical way to share our thoughts with the others. What mental capacities need to be present in the speaker capable of properly producing and understanding the implicit level of communication? Implicit communication, I’ll argue, entails the capacity for meta-representational thinking. Therefore, the mastery of implicit communication is a sufficient and not necessary datum for inferring the capacity for meta-representationality.
