AbstractResearch on functionally graded materials (FGM) plates has received much attention recently due to appealing material properties of FGM over the conventional multi-layer composite materials. Various approximate two-dimensional plate theories (Reddy 2000; Zenkour 2005) and approaches based on three-dimensional elasticity (Vel and Betra 2004; Li et al 2006) are adopted to study the behavior of FGM plates. This paper presents free vibration analysis of FGM plates based on three-dimensional theory of elasticity. The displacements are approximated a triplicate series in the three dimensional coordinates similar to the approach of Li et al (2006) using Chebyshev polynomials. In the present study, the beam functions obtained by free vibration of beams with similar end conditions are used to describe the variation of displacements in the coordinates on the plane of the plate while the variation of displacements in the thickness are approximated by the Chebyshev polynomials. Power-law FGMs are considered and the Poisson’s ratio is assumed to be constant. FGM plates with two different sets of support conditions, namely simply-supported all around (SSSS) and two adjacent edges simply-supported and the two adjacent edges clamped are studied. The free vibration frequencies are determined by the Ritz method. This approach shows good convergent result and agreement with other research.
