Abstract

Moody and Matsumoto (2011a) outline four culturally salient personality characteristics that are typically portrayed in Japanese 'language entertainment' genre of television: (1) 'competence', (2) yuuki 'courage', (3) jigyaku 'self-effacement and (4) genki 'enthusiasm'. As a genre of television that is found throughout East and South East Asia — especially in places where English is taken as a second or foreign language (i.e. the 'outer circle' of English users) — the 'language entertainment' genre has developed within popular culture as a site where English varieties can be linguistically modelled and promoted to the general public. While there are clearly linguistic ramifications of this modelling, the modelling and promotion of English also responds to cultural stereotypes of what a successful English speaker's personality should be like. This presentation will review how pop culture portrayals of English speakers encourage the audience adopt the personality characteristics of those speakers for successful language learning.
