This paper examines the connotations of the terms “ren yi” 仁義 and “jian ai” 兼愛 employed in the “Tiandao” chapter of Zhuangzi, arguing that they may not stand for the ethical notions “ren yi” and “jian ai” in Confucian or Mohist moral philosophy. The examination suggests that Zhuangzi’s use of the terms resonates classical discourses of power-struggle strategy. By adopting a strategic reading of the connotations of the terms, one cannot only make sense of the “Tiandao” chapter, but can also explain how the chapter coheres with other chapters of Zhuangzi. and contextualize the use of the terms in a web
