AbstractThe occurrences of the compound terms “Ru-Mo” 儒墨 (Confucianism and Mohism) and “Kong-Mo” 孔墨 (Kongzi and Mozi) in early (pre-Han and Han dynasty) texts have received considerable attention in the study of the history of Mohism. Historians of Mohism draw on early discourses that employ “Ru-Mo” or “Kong-Mo” to speculate about the status or vicissitude of Mohism in Chinese intellectual history. However, the relevance of “Ru-Mo” and “Kong-Mo” to the study of Confucianism or classicism has long been neglected. This paper is a preliminary attempt to demonstrate the relevance of early “Ru-Mo” and “Kong-Mo” discourses to late Qing debates concerning the nature of Confucianism and classicism: it demonstrates late Qing Confucian scholars employ an early coupling of “Ru” and “Mo” (or Kongzi and Mozi) to support their understanding of or approaches to Confucian classics.
