Abstract | I use “traveller’s perspective” as a metaphor to denote my posture in this context. Why traveller’s perspective? The notion of “time-space compression” raised by David Harvey (1990) claims that the process of globalization and advancement of technology have fundamental changes on our experiences of time and space, and more importantly, makes our mobility possible and travel more comfortable. Drawing on my own experience, a traveller always brings the “hometown” with him or her to the journey. We recall our hometown when we visit places similar or totally different. “Hometown” is our point of reference to understand the “otherness” during the journey. Of course during the journey, very often, we take some souvenirs back home as decoration or as a memory. However, no matter how many souvenirs we take, we are not going to produce the same “otherness” in our hometown. Or, I should say it is indeed dangerous to have this thought. This also reminds me of the disaster of the “wolf boy socialization” cases in sociology. When the wolf boys were brought back to the modern world to be re-socialized, they died after a year, owing to social, emotional and cultural disintegration. This example perhaps draws our attention to reflect on the role of social, cultural and historical issues in the transfer of knowledge, especially in educational research and policy. Pursuing this traveller’s perspective, I am well aware of my non-European experience, and taking my “hometown” in dialogue with the European or global context. As Cowen’s paper is very comprehensive, I will only focus on three issues for discussion, namely “Nation (at the Center of Educational Research) at Risk?”, “Ranking Epidemic and Policy Tourism”, and “What and whose Educational Space and Epistemic Forms?”. |
