Abstract

Drawing upon data derived from WeChat and its users’ life experiences, this paper explores the vernacular affordances of WeChat in the cross-border life of Chinese mainland dual migrants. In this study, 24 low-skilled Chinese dual migrants from the mainland working as security guards and cleaners were recruited and took part in in-depth interviews and group discussions. The lives of these dual migrants are marked by both their vulnerable status (politically, socially, and economically) and by the stresses and vicissitudes that characterize their daily transiting between Zhuhai (place of residence) and Macao (place of work). Chinese mainland dual migrants use electronic media for support, pleasure and for accessing information: one of the main online platforms they utilize is WeChat, a social networking site available on mobile phones. By framing dual migrants’ WeChat usage within the affordances of social media, WeChat can function as a digital mediated space providing migrants with forms of communal solidarity, social interaction, access to information, and in some cases economic benefits.
