Abstract | The frequent occurrence of the compound terms “Ru-Mo” 儒墨 (Confucianism and Mohism) and “Kong-Mo” 孔墨 (Kongzi and Mozi) in early (pre-Han and Han dynasty) texts has received considerable attention in the study of the history of Mohism. Historians of Mohism draw on early “Ru-Mo” or “Kong-Mo” discourses to speculate about the status or vicissitude of Mohism in Chinese intellectual history. However, the relevance of the “Ru-Mo” and “Kong-Mo” coupling to the study of Confucianism or classicism has long been neglected. This paper is a preliminary attempt to demonstrate the relevance of early “Ru-Mo” and “Kong-Mo” discourses to late Qing Confucian debates. It demonstrates that late Qing Confucian scholars employed an early juxtaposition of “Ru” and “Mo” (Kongzi and Mozi) to support their assumptions regarding the nature of the Confucian classics. |
