AbstractThis talk reports on an ongoing project (AuTema-PostEd) developed at the University of Macau with a view to tapping into the translation and post-editing processes of 16 professional translators working with the language pair Chinese-Portuguese in both directions (L1-L2/L2-L1). Data collection involved key logging (Translog-II) and eye tracking (Tobii Eye Tracker T120) to capture the translators’ behaviors while translating and post-editing news texts containing ca. 80 words or word equivalents. Subjects performed in total 4 tasks: 1 direct translation, 1 inverse translation, and 1 post-editing in L1 and 1 post-editing in L2 of automatic translations provided by PCT (Portuguese-Chinese Translator) (Wong et al 2012). Data was analyzed using empirical user activity data (UAD) (Carl et al 2011). Preliminary results point to: 1) post-editing as an activity as effortful and time-consuming as translation; and 2) substantial impact of translation direction on task durability.
