AbstractConidia spores are specialized asexual reproductive cells of filamentous fungi. They are ubiquitous in the environment and are the main propagules for plant and animal infections. One important property for spore survival is their ability to stay dormant for a long time until encountering favorable growth conditions. However, little is known about when and how fungal spores establish dormancy. In this work, we apply a Functional Genomics approach to determine transcription activity in spores of different developmental stages in order to find out when spores enter dormancy. Results from three filamentous fungi including two pathogenic species suggest that the so-called dormant spores are transcriptionally active and responsive to the environment at various stages of development. It is believed that transcripts in spores are needed during germination. Therefore, our finding implies that spores found in the environment, which are arrested at all different developmental stages, would carry very different sets of transcripts and may have different germination ability and property. This has important implications for fungal infection studies.
