Abstract | Although employee silence is commonplace in every organization, little is known about the antecedents of different motives of employee silence and the mechanisms through which these antecedents contribute to the different motives of the silence. This paper investigates and develops a framework on the mechanisms of how perceptions of politics contribute to the different motives of employee silence, and provide a framework for these complex and subtle relationships between organizational politics and employee silence. Specifically, this paper proposes that perceptions of politics serve as an antecedent to certain motives of the silence, namely self-protective, self-promotive, and inconsequential silence. It also proposes that employees’ work motivation, in particular, employees with high accomplishment striving, have a lower propensity to engage in inconsequential silence. Empirical results supported the hypotheses, and implications for managers and future research are provided. |
