The title of this essay clearly refers to the book by Antoine Berman (1942-1991), La traduction et la lettre ou l'auberge du lointain, published for the first time in France in 1985, and translated into Portuguese in 2007, with the title A tradução e a letra ou o albergue do longínquio (The translation and the letter or the shelter of the distant letters). In a course taught in 2012 for the Masters in Translation Studies at the University of Macau, I chose this book by Berman as a support for the discussions on “Translation and Comparative Literature”, and translation of poetry between Chinese and Portuguese, as presented in this text. The question is: what is the relationship between the “shelter of the distant letters” and the Bermanian concepts such as “ethical translation”, “translation-of-the-letter”, among others, with Chinese ideograms and, finally, with translation of poetry in China?
