Abstract | PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to investigate the characters and related factors upon quality of life (QOL) in Macao undergraduates. METHODS. 818 students (391 males and 427 females) from University of Macao (UMAC), Macao Polytechnic Institute (IPM), Institute for Tourism (IFT) and Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) were recruited to complete a self-designed questionnaire including background materials and QOL investigation. The self-designed QOL instrument, scored 1 – 5 points from “very poor or dissatisfaction” to “very good or satisfaction”, comprises 33 items to measure the domains of physical health (4 items), psychological health (6 items), social relationships (5 items), independence (4 items) and environment (14 items), instead of 26 items of the WHOQOL-BREF instrument developed World Health Organization. Previous study showed that the self-designed QOL instrument is valid and reliable. RESULTS. Female students had higher scores than male in social relationships. Hierarchy regression analysis showed that the total scores of QOL were related to the issues of medical need, living status, reference materials, recreation, sociality, management of daily activity and social support in males. For females, QOL scores were affected by physical fitness, physical figure, living status, recreation, management of daily activity, social relationships, and medical & health service. Age, grade, school, regular exercise did not affect the scores of QOL. CONCLUSIONS. There have gender differences on the scores and influencing factors of QOL. It suggests that related administrative and educators should adopt the corresponding strategy to improve QOL for the students of Macao universities. |
