Abstract

Chinese polysemous words have the characteristics of high frequency, abundant meanings, and complex grammatical functions. Therefore, it is important to order senses and select appropriate examples according to their priority. However, many Chinese learners’ dictionaries cannot show which sense or syntactic function is important. Through the use of the CCL corpus, this paper analyzes the senses and syntactic functions of commonly used intermediate-level disyllabic words. It calculates the frequency of each syntactic function for every sense and compares the result with learners’ dictionaries. It then puts forward suggestions on how to order senses of polysemous words and provide examples in Chinese learners’ dictionaries. This study shows that providing frequency information of senses and syntactic functions is an important step to optimize Chinese learners’ dictionaries.
