Abstract | Phonological awareness refers to the specific ability to focus on identifying and manipulate oral units. According to the phonological awareness classification theory it is possible to identify 3 levels: word, syllable and phoneme awareness. Several studies have shown that phonological awareness plays a crucial role in foreign language learning. In recent years, economic and trade cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries have increased intensively. At the same time, more and more universities began offering Portuguese courses and, on the other hand the demand of Portuguese/Chinese bilinguals become popular in Mainland China. However, the study of Portuguese is still focused on areas such as grammar, translation and literature. In terms of research these are the areas preferred by the authors, leaving for second place several and important aspects of linguistics. It was also perceived the lack of studies on phonological awareness between Chinese and Portuguese, neglecting a significant area on teaching and learning strategies in what concerns these two languages. This study aims to identify the characteristics of the development of Portuguese’s phonological awareness of Chinese speakers. According to the conducted tests, we expect to highlight some of the characteristics and most common difficulties presented by Chinese speakers learning Portuguese. Furthermore, we also tried to come up with some of suggestions that could help both teachers and students overcoming some of the obstacles. On our study 40 students were selected (average age between 18-23 years). Phonological awareness performance data was collected from their answers to the applied surveys/tests, where tasks covered the three types of phonological awareness. The more evident characteristics of the development of phonological awareness of Chinese speakers are presented, including 1) the performance of third-year subjects is much better than first-year informants; 2) for all students syllable awareness seems to be the easiest, the performance of phoneme awareness is slightly inferior to the syllable awareness; 3) regarding the first-year informants, the word awareness tends to be more difficult, with no significant difference between syllable and phonemic awareness; 4) Third-year students, revealed better results on syllable awareness performance then in phonemic awareness; 5) among the phonemic awareness tasks, the discrimination of the pair [p, b] was the most difficult. In the specific area of teaching and learning Portuguese, it is important to train phonological awareness. According to the characteristics of the phonological awareness development and learning habits of the Chinese speakers, it will be advisable to explore several tasks that combine games, tests with activities that motivate and develop students’ phonological awareness. |
