After the publication of Polidori’s “The Vampyre” in 1817, a sequel was published in France as Lord Ruthwen: le Vampire by Cyprien Bérard; two major stage adaptions appeared, the first “Le Vampire” by Charles Nodier in 1819 in Paris, the second, in a liberal translation (really further adaptation) of the previous play by J.R. Planché, called “The Bride of the Isles.” This chapter presents a comparison of the different ways in the two French texts and the British text treat the relationship with Byron, arguing that while Planché’s depiction is closer to the Byronic hero, in all three the vampire is still decidedly aristocratic.
