| Abstract | In 1939, residents in Hope Township (Wangzhen), a rural village of near Chengdu, watched as Lei Mingyuan, a leader of the Gowned Brothers (Paoge), executed his own teenage daughter. Her body was quickly swept away by the raging river, but the cold-blooded killings lingered in villagers’ memory. Six years later, a female college student in the Department of Sociology at Yanching University arrived in Hope Township to conduct fieldwork and research. She spent more than a month getting to know Lei Mingyuan and his family and recorded many previously unknown facts about the murder and the secret society. Over 70 years later, however, these documents remain unknown, sealed from public view in the Peking University Library. This book uses Lei Mingyuan’s filicide as a starting point in an examination that includes many other sources--archival materials, literature, memoirs, and other private and official documents--to study the environment, history, culture, and organization of the Gowned Brothers, and the structures of local power in rural Sichuan. This examination of Lei Mingyuan and his family incorporates the multidisciplinary and microscopic perspectives of sociology, anthropology, and history. This study provides a window to examine how early Chinese sociologists and anthropologists understood rural communities. Thus, this book connects a family in a rural community that had little overt influence on national destiny with many intellectuals and their ideologies that did have a fundamental impact on China to illustrate how a place as small as Hope Township was connected to the larger Chinese society and political sphere. |
