Abstract | People often understand “Chinese philosophy” as a philosophy dealing with the theoretical ideas or concepts, ways of thinking, and the conceptual systems which have been developed in China and from the long and rich historical and religious traditions of the Chinese cultures and Chinese life. Obviously, this understanding of the “Chinese philosophy” assumes a specific relationship between “China” and the “philosophy”. But the key question here is how we really understand this relationship? Scholars in and outside China have argued for many years and held different positions because this understanding of the very concept of the Chinese philosophy will not only help us to understand what happened in the Chinese philosophy in the past but also and more importantly, affect the direction of the future development of Chinese philosophy. |
