Abstract

The distinction between Zeitlichkeit and Temporalität enables a new reflection on the relation between Laozi and Heidegger. This question is raised not in the sense that we attempt to read Heidegger’s philosophy into Laozi’s text or to articulate some similarities between the two philosophies. The question is meaningful because Heidegger’s distinction between Zeitlichkeit and Temporalität has called for the reflection of each everyday conception of time because any ideology of time is only a realization, yet a concealment, of Zeitlichkeit. The analysis of the ideology of time means not a historical-anthropological research over the ancient conception of time; rather, as Heidegger has emphasized, this inquiry itself is metaphysics. To recover a Daoist version of metaphysics does not imply constructing a Daoist worldview but to question the ontological origin of such a system of thought; to question on what basis (or non-basis) that this particular understanding of time and being emerged in history.
