Abstract | Macao was under Portuguese administration for over four hundred years and has developed its unique culture. In the long history of Macao, interpreters played an important role in the Chinese-Portuguese communications in terms of religious activities and trade. However, large scale translation movement did not begin until the mid-1990s, the period before the handover of Macao from Portugal to China. This paper has reviewed the translation development in Macao in areas such as translators, translator training, translation management, translation needs and translation publications. The results of the investigation show that translation is a bridge connecting different cultures and peoples, and at the same time a mirror reflecting the ups and downs of the society it serves. |
