AbstractPublic notices are important means and channels for governmental institutions as well as non-governmental institutions to speak to the public. The language(s) in public notices can reflect the identity, attitudes, intentions and expectations of the message sender, and at the same time, reflect the identity of the receiver. Macao is an international tourist city in which public notices are commonly seen in two to three language versions, namely, Chinese, Portuguese and English. Therefore, the process of preparing such public notices inevitably involves translation. The present article is part of a research project that aims to study the languages, text types and text functions of public notices and the related translation strategies. The research will be carried out in a functional approach, which involves Reiss’s (1977/1989) theory of typology. Examples for the analysis are extracted from the data collected for the above mentioned research project. The results of the research show that functional theories can be used in the study of the languages of public notices and, to certain extend, in explaining related translation strategies.
