AbstractFor translation teaching, different models could be used as points of departure. Katharina Reiss’s text typology model, which is known as a functionalist approach to translation studies, has been used in our translation teaching. Aiming initially at systematizing the assessment of translations, Reiss links the three functions of text (i.e. informative, expressive and operative) to their corresponding language dimensions and to the communicative situation as well as to translation strategies. This paper attempts to explore how to apply Reiss’s text typology theory to the practice of English-Chinese translation teaching, and to discuss how the acquisition of competence for text analysis and for translation can be improved through actual translation practice guided by this functionalist theory. It is hoped that the findings of the research will give some revelations to English-Chinese translation teaching in the greater China areas.
