AbstractJames Joyce’s Ulysses is considered by many scholars one of the best English-language novels of the 20th century, and has been translated into many other languages. However, it was not until the year 1994 did the first full text of its Chinese translation come into publication. Before Ulysses was translated into Chinese, very few Chinese readers were able to touch the book and even fewer had ever attempted to read it. This paper is to discuss the Chinese translation done by Xiao and Wen that was first published in 1994 by the Nanjing Yilin Publishing. By focusing on two of the translators’ strategies, namely, annotation and adaptation, the paper will examine how the translators rendered this ‘unreadable’ book into a readable one for ordinary Chinese readers, and to discuss the role of literary translation in challenging or reinforcing cultural differences.
