‘妖魔化’的構詞反映印歐語言中常用的後綴用法，其來源似乎與英文中demonize一詞有密切關係。借助語料庫工具（Google Books Ngram Viewer），我們發現，自上世紀80年代初起，英文demonize及其曲折變化形式的使用頻率直綫上升。用‘妖魔化’檢索北京大學現代漢語語料庫得到86條結果：其中包括《人民日報》2000年的6條報道，新華社2001-2004年間的22條新聞報道。這標誌著‘妖魔化’進入中文主流媒體並被頻頻使用，其中‘妖魔化’的對象主要指國家、政治人物和政治理念。此外，檢索結果中的人物訪談及網絡語料顯示，‘妖魔化’已被用於廣泛的對象，如明星、醫生、教師、女博士、社會事件、做法以及價值觀，甚至河南人、廣東人和廣東地區。北京語言大學大數據與語言教育研究所BCC漢語語料庫以更豐富的數據印證以上的發現，並提供‘妖魔化’歷年使用數據，明確顯示其具有‘流行詞’的特徵。
This paper examines the use of yaomohua in Modern Chinese and compares it with the English counterpart ‘demonize’ in some diachronic and synchronic perspectives. We attempt to describe yaomohua in terms of the subject being demonized and the agent of demonizing, the frequently-used sentence structures in which the word occurs, using corpora of the Peking University, Beijing Culture and Language University and Academia Sinica. Based on diachronic figures, yaomohua, with its frequency of occurrence showing two significant surges in recent years, tends to be more of a ‘trendy’ word than a regularly used ‘common’ word. We also discuss possible reasons and factors leading to the emergence of the word, and elaborate on potential areas for future studies.
