AbstractOBJECTIVES: Enteral nutrition care in China meets much difficulty, which demands for further understanding physician’s opinions about enteral nutrition care. Thus, this study aimed to investigate physicians’ suggestions for improving enteral nutrition care in China, expecting to provide evidence for further reforming enteral nutrition care in the Chinese hospitals. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was performed in Guangdong City, China. Physicians in all 31 Grade II and Grade III hospitals were surveyed through questionnaire. Descriptive and Chi-test were applied for data analysis. RESULTS: A total of 310 valid questionnaires were collected. With regard to improvement needs for enteral nutrition products, the respondents’ choice included “few product of varieties” (74.8%), “price is too high” (50.0%), “not easy to store” (40%), “poor taste” (36.1%), “unreasonable formula proportion” (28.7%), and “inconvenient to use” (24.2%). Regarding barriers to provide enteral nutrition care, the respondents identified “lack of relevant knowledge” (80.0%), “no clear guidelines” (76.8%), “lack of attention” (54.8%), “unclear division of tasks” (43.9%), and “lack of time” (28.7%). For the measures that could contribute to the actual improvement of enteral nutrition support, the respondents chose “establish industry norms” (85.2%), “education programs” (71.0%), “amend regulation policy” (66.5%), and “increase related inputs” (62.3%). The respondents’ choices were mostly significantly (P < 0.05) associated with hospital level, hospital department and their physician title. CONCLUSIONS: The physicians in China think existing enteral nutrition products were far from their expectations. They call for more specific guidelines of enteral nutrition care and extensive training to support their clinical practice of enteral nutrition.
