AbstractBackground: Self-medication with conventional medicines and traditional Chinese medicines (TCM) concurrently is common in China. However, pharmacy practice in this area has not been fully investigated. Purpose: The purpose was to explore key stakeholders’ opinions about pharmacists’ role in the concurrent use of conventional medicines and TCM, barriers that hindered pharmacists from providing care related to such use, and solutions that would support pharmacists extending their role in this area. Methods: Fourteen semi-structured interviews with pharmacists and key stakeholders were conducted in China in 2017. Results: The prevalent use of conventional medicines and TCM concurrently was generally recognized. Confusion about concurrent use and integrative use led to variations in perceived risks and benefits, and attitudes towards the need for pharmacist’s intervention. Nine barriers were identified with a lack of clear definition and guidance about integrative use, a lack of professional image, and a disconnection among pharmacy education, continuing professional development and registration standards being discussed the most. Seven solutions were proposed. Of those, policies that support pharmacy practice, review of competence development and registration criteria, and development of practice guidelines were considered the most important. Various opinions about the role of TCM pharmacists were collected. Conclusion: As the evidence base to support the concurrent use of conventional medicines and TCM continues to unroll, collaborative efforts among the government, professional organizations and universities are needed to strategically plan the development of pharmacy practice in this area.
