AbstractBackground: Herbal preparations (HPs) are popular among breastfeeding women around the world. This study aimed to identify the perception and the use pattern of HPs among breastfeeding women in Macau. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was administered via an online survey platform. Purposive sampling was used to invite women ≥18 years of age, who were breastfeeding or had breastfed in the last 12 months to participate anonymously. Results: Of the 515 respondents who completed the questionnaire, 48.9% strongly agreed or agreed that HPs were generally safe to take during breastfeeding and 61.3% believed that HPs were safer to take than prescription medicines during breastfeeding. Although 56.3% strongly disagreed or disagreed that there was enough reliable and accurate information to inform their decision about HPs, 62.7% reported that they had used HPs during breastfeeding. The mean age of HPs users was 32.4 years old and the number of children they had ranged from 1 to 4, with an average of 1.5. Factors associated with use included employment status, durations of breastfeeding (both total and exclusively), and the presence of breastfeeding-related health problems. The average number of HPs used was 4, with amaximum of 17, with tetrapanax papyriferus (48.7%), lecithin (44.7%), Vaccaria segetalis (19.8%), fenugreek (19.2%) and DHA (19.2%) being most commonly used. Main purposes of use included ‘unblocking plugged milk ducts’ and ‘increasing milk supply’.
