Abstract | With a focus on the aesthetic and ethics of anthropomorphism, this paper will argue that the selected picture books display Anthony Browne’s departure from conventional anthropomorphism and towards images more subversive of anthropocentrism. Addressing further how Browne’s re-calibrated anthropomorphism entails a posthuman subjectivity, promotes the mutability of human beings, and abolishes boundaries between categories of identity—whether of species, or of nature and culture in a prob- lematically anthropocentric society, I consider Browne’s anthropomorphism as an instance of an ethical approach to thinking with animals in the Age of the Anthropocene. |
