Abstract | "Marlow’s “Delicious sensations”: On the Persistence of Affect in Joseph Conrad’s Heart" speculates on what it might mean to reorient critical discussions on the scene from one focused on disjunction (of object and place) to one focused on continuity of feelings and transmissibility of affects. It joins recent critics who have found Affect Theory generative in analyzing Heart of Darkness, whether it be to explain the unmistakable melancholia of the work (Enderwitz) or to examine the ways in which Conrad constructs “atmosphere” that encourages reading practices grounded on a phenomenology of “affective attunement” (Abramson 336). The overwhelming focus on the “book in the jungle” (Richardson 3) as a “symbol of tradition, sanity, and the moral idea (Leavis 177) that is either amplified or undermined by one or another aspect of the text has unfortunately translated to the neglect of examining the affects and feelings that seem to me to be much more than an inconsequential embellishment to the scene. In shifting attention from sign to feeling, I offer preliminary thoughts toward the formulation of a theoretical grammar that is less interested in locating moments of soft subversions and more invested in trying to explain why colonial legacies endure. |
