Abstract | The Fourth Workshop on Numerical Algebra and High Performance Computation was held at University of Macau from December 8 to 10, 2012. The annual workshop aims at providing a high level forum for Chinese researchers around the world to review recent developments and explore exciting new directions in the areas of numerical algebra and high performance computing. It highlights recent advances in theoretical, computational and practical aspects of numerical algebra and scientific computing. There were thirty invited speakers in this workshop, see, http://news.umac.mo/nrs/faces/pub/viewItem.jspx?id=22849 The Workshop is the fourth in the series with the first three held in Shanghai in 2009, Guangzhou in 2010, and Hong Kong in 2011, respectively. This special issue contains 7 papers from the invited speakers, which cover several aspects in mathematical modeling and computational methods. In the first paper, the authors establish some explicit expressions for normwise, mixed and componentwise type condition numbers for the weighted Moore-Penrose inverse of a matrix A B and more general matrix function compositions involving Kronecker products. In the second paper, the authors propose a dual iterative approach to solve the minimization problem of the hybrid regularizations, and apply the method to the problem of MR image reconstruction from highly random under-sampled k-space data. In the third paper, the authors derive the artificial boundary condition method in terms of infinite Fourier series to solve a class of quasi-Newtonian Stokes flows. In the fourth paper, the authors exploit a fast exponential time integration scheme for solving a two dimensional partial integro-differential equation which is derived from the stochastic volatility jump diffusion model with jumps both in return and volatility. In the fifth paper, the authors compare different techniques on solving the inverse quadratic eigenvalue problem of constructing n × n real symmetric matrices M, C and K so that the quadratic pencil Q( ) = 2M + C + K has the good approximations of the given k eigenpairs. In the sixth paper, the authors study the relation between the tensor product of matrices and a multilinear map defined by the optimal operator, and conclude that the linear transform (mediating morphism) hidden in the abstract definition of the general tensor product can be determined explicitly in this particular case. In the last paper, the authors present a sharp upper bound for the perturbation of eigenvalues of a singular diagonalizable matrix which was given by S. Eisenstat in Linear Algebra Appl., 416 (2006) pp. 742-744. On behalf of the organization committee members, we would like to thank Prof. Zhong-Ci Shi, Editor-in-Chief of East Asian Journal on Applied Mathematics, for devoting a special issue of the journal to the Fourth Workshop on Numerical Algebra and High Performance Computation, 2012. We are grateful to the Vice Rector of University of Macau, Prof. Haydn H. D. Chen, for delivering a speech in the opening ceremony of the workshop. We would also like to thank the Faculty of Science and Technology of University of Macau for the financial support, and the Dean of Faculty of Science and Technology, Prof. C. L. Philip Chen, and the Rector of University of Macau, Prof. Wei Zhao, for their kind support. Finally, this special issue is partially supported by the multi-year research grant MYRG098(Y1-L3)-FST13-JXQ of University of Macau. |
