Abstract | Recent advances in Machine translation, notably the development of deep learning systems, known as Neural Machine Translation have vastly improved the quality of translations that can be produced by freely available online MT systems. With specific focus on English-Chinese translation, given that “disposable information” can now be translated by MT systems with minimal post-editing, it appears that technological advances have further tilted the balance towards at least partial replacement of human translators. Given this possibility, translator training must accordingly move towards training translators to efficiently intervene rather than labour in the translation process. This paper argues for a shift in focus, from treating machine translation as an aid, to integration of machine translation in translator training to achieve rapid translations of high quality. Such training may help keeping human translators relevant to the process while improving translation efficiency. The ideas presented here represent no more than a preliminary exploration of the need and forms that such a pedagogy might take. |
