AbstractTheme of Conference: Teaching and teacher education in an era of accountability. What do we know and what do we need to know? Research Background and Literature During the last decade, economies around the world have been actively building up 21st century competence in their school children in preparation of the arrival of the digital age (see http://www.p21.org/overview/skills-framework for the Framework of Partnership for 21st Century Skills). Digital reading, which is complementary to that of print reading, is envisaged as one such salient competence for our daily interaction in the digital world (OECD, 2011 Research Questions The researcher of the present study would like to know after making a comparison with the five top-performing economies (i.e. Korea, New Zealand, Australia, Japan and Hong Kong) in digital reading literacy in PISA2009, are Macao teachers well-prepared for digital reading instruction in the information age of the 21st century. Borrowing the experiences of the five top-performing economies participating in PISA 2009 digital reading assessment, the researcher would like to see what initiatives schools and teachers may adopt for the betterment of digital reading literacy of adolescents in Macao. With these research aims in mind, the present study seeks to answer the following three research questions: 1. What is the average correlation between digital reading and print reading performance for the five top-performing economies in digital reading literacy in PISA 2009? How does this result compared to that of Macao? 2. What are the average percentage variance explained for ICT use at home, as well as that explained for ICT use at school, on digital reading performance for the five top-performing economies in PISA 2009? How do these results compared to that of Macao? 3. What is the average percentage variance explained for reading materials and activities, as well as that of learning strategies and attitudes, on digital reading performance for the five top-performing economies in PISA 2009? How do these results compared to that of Macao?
